Rasteau Ico(o)n 2010

Ico(o)n reflects the force of Rasteau’s terroir, all the while expressing finesse and elegance. It has its own small cellar, where the 7 best selected parcels available at Cave de Rasteau are used in its production: Grenache from the famous Saint Didier, Girards, Chaberte and Crapons localities, boasting typical yellow clay soils; Syrah from Encostes and Combe Julière, offering well-watered deep clays and loamy sand; and Mourvedre from Blovac Nord, comprising a first layer of dry gravel, followed by deeper marls. Afterwards, specific and rigorous production requirements are respected at once in the vineyard and in the cellar, including hand picking in crates, containing 10 to 12 kg at the most – nothing short of star treatment !

  • GRAPE VARIETY : Grenache noir 40 %, Syrah 35 %, Mourvèdre 25 %
  • VITICULTURE : Each parcel is managed according to specific requirements. The vineyards of Syrah and Mourvèdre are trained using the Cordon de Royat technique, thereby leaving as many leaves as possible, in view of promoting the synthesis and concentration of the skins’ polyphenols. The harvest is entirely handpicked in small crates, containing at the most 10 to 12 kg of grapes.
  • VINIFICATION : The cellar uses the following equipment and techniques: a vibrating table to sort the entire bunches of grapes, a traditional stalk separator, a second vibrating table to manually sort berry by berry, a modular crush pad and an anti-gravity filling method (via the bottom of the vat to avoid damaging the fruit). Thermo-regulated raw cement and tronconic vats (hot and cold) are used. Winemaking techniques include: frequent manual pumping over, vatting for 5 weeks, running off at a warm temperature, barreling and malolactic fermentation in oak casks. Twelve months in French oak barrels and 600-liter casks – 40% of which are new.
  • TASTING NOTES : Deep ruby color.
    Intense and complex aromas, evoking red berries, sultanas, red plums, aromatic herbs such as sage-tarragon -thyme-bay leaf, softwood (pine, olive tree) – and a hint of balsamic vinegar.
    Velvety and ample palate, well-balanced (at once suave and fresh), with plenty of persistence, characterized by well-ripened red berries and pepper.
  • FOOD PAIRING : roast beef with gravy or mustard seed roast pork.

Ortas – Cave de Rasteau

Established in 1925, this cooperative winery is the chief producer of the Rasteau appellation. Its wines are essentially made from Grenache. Over the past few years it has become the leading supplier of Rhone Valley wines in Quebec, thanks to Ortas Tradition, and is also number one in Ireland. Le Cercle des Vignerons du Rhône is now the result of an service union between three cellars:
